Many people have experienced changes in their menstrual cycles during summer, and there are scientific reasons behind this occurrence. Today, we’re going to be talking about how summers affect menstrual cycles, what some common symptoms are, and how to battle the heat this season!

In the summer months, the higher temperatures and increased Vitamin D exposure can cause more frequent and longer periods, while stress due to the heat could cause hormonal imbalances in your body. In addition, the summer heat can cause dehydration,  which could also cause more intense pain during your period. studies show that there is a correlation with more Vitamin D exposure and the increased production of a follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), which could also lead to frequent and longer periods. Some bodies are more sensitive to weather changes, which could cause disrupted sleep and immense discomfort. During your period this summer, you might notice some mild symptoms such as dehydration, changes in your menstrual cycle, feeling a bit more tired than usual, and some general discomfort. 

Fortunately, there are several ways to alleviate these symptoms and help you feel better during your period this summer. Firstly, it is key to stay hydrated; drinking more water is immensely important, helps blood flow and flushing out toxins, so that is essential! Secondly, opting for loose-fitting and flowy clothing instead of tight garments can help you feel more comfortable during the summer, as it allows for better air circulation and reduces sweating. It is always a good idea to bring extra period products year-round, and having a healthy diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, and grains can help you feel more energetic. For now, avoid caffeine and highly processed foods, since they decrease water retention. 

To end things off, while summer's heat brings both joys and discomfort, it can also impact your menstrual cycle in various ways. From potentially longer and more frequent periods due to increased temperatures and Vitamin D exposure to heightened discomfort and hormonal shifts exacerbated by dehydration and stress, the effects can be profound. However, by staying hydrated, wearing breathable clothing, and maintaining a balanced diet, you can mitigate these symptoms and enjoy a more comfortable summer despite the challenges posed by your menstrual cycle.
