In 2024, California continues to lead the way in menstrual equity with the introduction of new laws designed to improve access to period products. Today, we’ll be talking about new laws and bills relating to menstrual equity in today’s day and age, and some older ones as well. The evolution of period laws in California itself is crucial for advancing gender equity and public health, and are advancements for the world in general as an example.

Firstly, tampon tax is a term that refers to the tax rate that a state, country, or government collects on the retail purchase of feminine retail products, even though they are a necessity to all. Many have seen and exempt general foods from tax, knowing it is a basic necessity, but not doing the same for menstrual products. As a result, it is crucial for the world to evolve with the generations and pass more laws to make necessities like this accessible to all. For example, in the Congress from 2023-2024, there was a bill passed to increase the availability and affordability of menstrual products for individuals with limited access, and for other purposes. One of the motives for this bill was to apply grants for low-income college students and others for menstrual products.

In addition, another assembly bill in California consists of “maintaining any combination of classes from grades 6 to 12, inclusive, to stock the school’s restrooms with an adequate supply of free menstrual products”. This was revolutionary in instilling equality in schools.

In all, California's evolving period laws represent a significant stride toward achieving menstrual equity and social justice. By ensuring that menstrual products are accessible in schools, workplaces, and public spaces, these laws help break down barriers for all.
